For the first time in its 88-year history, the AAHP held a Congressional briefing on Tuesday, Sept. 27. Speakers were Wayne Jonas, MD, president and CEO of the Samueli Institute, Robert Eder, editor in chief of Drug Store News, Mark Land, president of AAHP, and Alvin Lorman, legal counsel for AAHP.

A group of 30 people responsible for gathering health care-related information for Senators and Congressmen listened intently while these experts explained the benefits of homeopathic medicines and illustrated the growing consumer demand for natural choices. Some key educational points included:

- Consumers are increasing choosing homeopathic medicines due to their safety and are willing to pay out-of-pocket. When consumers have access to a wide range of over-the-counter (OTC) medicines, including homeopathic medicines, their quality of life is improved, and their overall health care costs are reduced.

- Most homeopathic drugs are OTC, and therefore they are not reimbursed by most private and public insurance schemes.

- OTC homeopathic drugs tend to be less expensive than allopathic OTC drugs, providing consumers with a cost-saving opportunity.

As one of two keynote speakers for the event, author, activist and mother of four Robyn O’Brien will share her thoughts on “The Unhealthy Truth About Our Food.” O’Brien founded www.allergykidsfoundation.org, an organization that focuses on restoring the integrity of our food supply and the health of children, and her critically acclaimed book, “The Unhealthy Truth: How Our Food Is Making Us Sick and What We Can Do About it,” was published on Mother’s Day 2009. O’Brien writes for several national magazines, and was recently recognized by The Discovery Channel as one of its 15 Top Visionaries and by Ted Turner’s Captain Planet Foundation as a “Superhero for the Earth.”

The event’s second keynote speaker, Mayim Bialik, will focus on “Parenting by Intuition: From Hollywood to Holistic Mom.” An actress, author and mother of two, Bialik is best known for her role as Blossom Russo on the early 1990s NBC sitcom, “Blossom,” and she currently stars as Amy Farrah Fowler on CBS’s hit series, “The Big Bang Theory.” Bialik has a doctorate in neuroscience, and is currently editing her book on attachment parenting, due out next spring. She lives a green and eco-friendly lifestyle.

In addition to its keynote speakers, the conference will also feature several educational workshop sessions, a holistic exhibit hall, and a silent auction. All manners of complementary care, including homeopathy, will be practiced. The atmosphere will be infused with fun, he says. Patch spoke more about his fundraising efforts for the clinic and his institute’s global good works as one of the conference’s featured speakers. His lecture, “Medicine for Fun not Funds,” was held before a packed room of enthusiastic supporters.

Both thought leaders in their respective fields, Schuyler and Rassat will offer an exciting lecture on botany’s place in medical history, as well as its standing in medicine today. Schuyler will explore the use of botany, and herbal and alternative medicines in the U.S. during the Revolutionary War, and how these botanicals and herbal remedies were a common feature in the arsenal of the late 18th-century physician, while Rassat will cover the renewed and increasing interest in homeopathic and herbal remedies in the world of medicine today. Following the lecture, Dr. George Wohlreich, Executive Director of The College of Physicians of Philadelphia, will moderate a brief discussion and Q&A session with the audience.

Co-sponsored by The College of Physicians and The American Revolution Center, this lecture is part of a series of lectures and discussions supported by The Richard Lounsbery Foundation of New York and Washington entitled “Les Seminars: Revolutionary Ideas.” The goal of the series is to make comparisons and show advances in education and the health sciences from the late 1700s to today.
